I probably would have enjoyed this one more if I knew who half the characters were. 
They really should have put some backstory in there.
At any rate it was a lot of fun to watch, and the animation looked pretty fantastic for the time it came out, but like with a lot of stuff by this director, expect a depressing and open-ended finale.
