Seems everyone really enjoyed it. I personally disliked the anime for a few reasons, one was it had such awesome animation and art style but they still decided to fill a chunk of every episode with a recycled battle sequence.. The music was very nice, but often overused to make scenes seem more impactful or just coincidentally every time there was a fight going on nearby. The story was alright, personally the character histories and developments interested me far more than the primary storyline however. The characters were well designed and emphasized although quite a few characters existed that seemed to serve no purpose. Also the story was quite annoying in how a lot of it played out regarding the characters, mainly:
I think my problem with this anime was that everything was done quite well, but they also seemed to slack and go about finishing everything off in a lazy fashion which makes everything not really worth it. Had the potential to be a really good anime but ruined by all the small but extremely numerous flaws imo.

by the way, i can't help noticing Klan-klan of Macross Frontier bears a resemblance to Aisha Klan-klan of Outlaw Star anime. Anybody who would have watched Outlaw Star may noticed my point. Even their names almost clicked together... O_o... Coincidentally my 2 best fav characters when it comes to space-themed animes

Totally useless and obnoxiously long post:
This show is proof that quality isn't dead, and that a series can still be just as powerful as it was 30 years ago. Even better in this case: Kawamori-san and his co-founded Satelight Studio delivers breathtaking frame after frame every time with clever use of 3D that doesn't clash with the traditional art, and dynamic, cinematic directing that few shows manage to do in even a single episode. You could take a picture of almost any second of this series, and hang it in a museum.
Frontier's story is an engaging, intimate relationship between a small, colorful cast of well developed characters, yet is propelled through a larger arc focusing on political and philosophical views and repercussions, many of which lead to powerful, deeply emotional reactions and resolutions. The relentless antagonistic aliens, the Vajra, like everything else in the show, are beautifully rendered and aesthetically striking, but also form a unique and intriguing connection to several of the main characters. Music is a major influence once again, but unlike the previous Macross 7, its presence is always appropriate, emotional, and never once feels out of place or silly.
You can enjoy Frontier without ever seeing any of the previous shows, but to truly grasp the story, and fully appreciate the numerous references and plot points, its highly recommended you give the others a try, even if you watch them after this. These references range from fairly large (Lynn Minmay, the Zentradi, Protoculture, the Macross Fleets, etc.) to fairly subtle yet highly entertaining fanservice. (Nyan Nyan restaurant, the entire episode "Legend of Zero," the musicians at Formo Mall playing Basara and Roy's instruments, the various Fire Bomber songs in the show, etc.)
In the end, this anime is one of the most enjoyable and powerful shows I've seen a long time, and considering my rather unhealthy collection and very critical tastes, that's no small feet. Do yourself a favor, and capture the magic that is Kawamori Shoji's incredible vision: Macross Frontier.
