I always thought that MD Geist and Genocyber were low rung on the anime scale. I remember buying the first tape of MD Geist from CPM years ago and feeling very, very ripped off. The late 80's/early 90's were inundated with crap anime in the US. At least CPM was nice about their prices, Right Stuff, ADV, and Viz always charged 35-40 dollars for as little as one thirty minute episode on a tape. I have probably put about a grand into buying tapes of Ranma 1/2...and I still don't have them all on VHS.That can be said more so today. well...imho I find more crap anime today then back in the day.

Actually, Genocyber's pretty good. The problem is, people see "FROM THE DIRECTOR OF M.D. GEIST" on the cover and dismiss it as garbage, even though not only is it far more effective as a horror series, but the first episode is actually extremely well-written and well-made.
What people don't realize is, other than the mechanical design (which Ohata is extremely good at- interesting note, he also designed the Hi-Nu Gundam and the Gunbuster), Ohata had next to no creative input.

I felt like it was a Guvyer rip-off (albeit far better animated) but still it was just pointlessly gory that really brought nothing to the table but its animation. I am not saying it was terrible, I am saying that I regret having paid $ 60.00 for the tapes.
And I think there is only more crap anime today because there is more anime today, period. Anime in the 80's, for the most part, only made it to the US if it had immediate appeal...which was that it contained what Americans had never really seen, which was extreme violence, adult situations, and nudity in a cartoon. You could pretty much get violence and nudity as anime, or everything else repackaged and translated as children's movies. I remember, I lived it.
Hell, I remember the first time I heard the word "anime" was in 92' or 93' everyone called it "Japanimation." Anime is more legitimate now, having finally been able to stand on its own two feet without being immediatly typified as "for adults only."
There is a magnificent wealth of anime made in the 80's never seen the in US. Most of what got translated, however, is what would immediately have appeal (or so it was assumed) in the US, which was violence and nudity. There are some real gems amongst what we did get here, but for every 8 Man After or Green Legend Ran we got, there was crap like the Fist of the North Star Movie bastardization and MD Geist.
I am not trolling, I am just saying that now days anime is a lot more legitimate. I remember paying $ 45.00 for two episodes of "You're Under Arrest." That shit wouldn't fly today, there's too much of a market now. Even translations are being taken more seriously for us purists. Viz's famous "Word Fit" system that basically amounted to, "Say whatever fits, woo!"
DVD Boxed sets are where its at for anime. I bought the Blue Seed boxes set for less than what I paid for the first four episodes on VHS. That's my kind of progress. BTW, I have like, 1,500 store-bought anime tapes. If anyone is looking for anything hard to find, I may have it and can try to get it converted. Keep in mind, my copy of Vengeance of the Space Pirate, aka Arcadia of My Youth's original release, is barely watchable...I expect many others will be the same.
And I don't even consider the term "mainstream." Everything is what it is to each person. Don't let Adult Swim deter you from watching something, or let some rabid fanboy/fangirl make you hate a show before you watch it. Cowboy Bebop was out in the US years before anyone had ever heard of it, especially The Cartoon Network.
This is a fantastic web-site, just imagine what it was like getting anime in 1988. Anyone ever hear of Warriors of the Wind? I'll give you a hint, its Carl Macek's way of labeling an "abortion."

japanimation, yup that stuff is boner-ville. i remember some of the stuff from the early 90s as well, with those hard to remember sophisticated names LOL. except the one called "fire and ice". just about all of them had a "sex" scene or some flash scene in it. it was porn you could watch with your friends and family LOL.

This series also has some absolutely brilliant music. I can probably upload the OSTs in a bit, if anyone wants them... the EDs are the low point of them, in my opinion, and even those are still damned listenable.
And btw, Fire and Ice was an American production from the mid-80s, not anime.

Is this the awful version with the green subtitles that are impossible to read? I am asking becaus eI already have the SPP version but the thumbnails show white subs... I still haven't watched this because it's impossible to read the subs unless I stick my head in front of the monitor...

Since no one answered my question I went ahead and downloaded it. Although this one seems to be by SSP-Corp (just like the one I had) the subs are different and the encoding is slightly different as well. This version is better in every aspect than the one I have and the subs are orange which are far more readable than green (still not white as in the thumbnails though:().
PS BTW What's up with some fansub groups and colored/stylized subs that are totally unreadable unless you stick your head on front of a monitor...

About the difference: SSP-Corp released a complete v2; those are the files in this torrent.
Small distinction: SSP-Corp is a DVD-ripping group and in principle uses the official DVD VobSubs. They do tend to tinker with the color settings/styles though.
Why are the screens showing white subs? That's because I took them with VLC, standard settings changes sub color to white.

Now that's the most interesting part of all. Myself I'm using MPC+fddshow+haali media splitter+a million things really...thing is no matter what I tried in both versions I couldn't change the color of a vobsub subtitle (I can change everything else except hardcoded ones). I only use VLC when I'm watching things on my Fedora server but I just downloaded the windows version and checked it out and unfortunately I still get orange subs with it.
It appears that it's not VLC but what you're using internally to render the vobsub subtitles....unless I'm missing something then please do help as I really hate them:p

Thanks for the Up
-Edit:-
It was one of my favorites. Although, I only was able to buy parts 1-3 on vhs, which I still have in my safe, I never saw parts 4&5. Finally, I can finish this "series" once and for all.
