i agree that they are irritating in the beginning (it almost made drop the series) however,
I think they intended for you not to like the protagonist's at the start of the show, but as you follow them through the story you find
yourself caring more and more about them and their struggles (at least it was that way for me) and just when you really start to sympathize with them the ending comes along really kicks you in the nuts.
watch the whole thing Infernikus you won't regret it.

same to anyone else who remains undecided. 11/10 just awesome.

Yeah I managed to finish it. They got somewhat bearable which id what got me through it as like you they were the reason i was considering dropping the series. For anyone looking to download this I suggest they do as it is in general a fairly good anime.

About the earthquake.. there's the sendo scale in Japan and the Richter scale we use internationally.

While the Richter scale measures the magnitude of the earthquake, it does not account for the distance of the epicenter to the surface of the Earth. In some cases, this means that a magnitude 8 earthquake will only be felt as a few tremors, because the epicenter was hundreds or thousands of meters below the Earth's surface.

Sendo, on the other hand, literally means "shaking." This is a more accurate measure of the way an earthquake will affect a pedestrian individual. To give a general idea, a 4 on the sendo scale will lead to books falling off shelves, furniture moved around, stuff tipped over, etc. A 5 on the sendo scale will lead to some damage to any non-earthquake proof buildings, including some structural damage. Six indicates heavy structural damage to all non-earthquake proof buildings, and seven will decimate even earthquake proof ones.

The problem with the recent happenings in Japan are twofold: the first is that the media quickly moved from focusing on the earthquake to focusing on the nuclear accident; this has led many international news watchers to underestimate the severity of the quake. The second would be that people assume that because the epicenter was many miles away from Tokyo, then Tokyo must not have been affected. This is untrue, on the Sendo scale, Tokyo was affected with a level 5 earthquake.

The northern parts near the center were, of course, devastated.

tl;dr THE EARTHQUAKE WAS WORSE THAN YOU THINK TOKYO WAS AFFECTED TOO (but not as badly).

I really love this anime. The story is absolutely unforgettable. The main character is an annoying brat for a while and you wish she died in the quake, but she comes around and the ending was truly heart wrenching. If someone can watch this anime and not burst into tears at one point or another they have no heart, period. lol

Come on, I'm sure he wasn't serious. The same idea crossed my mind "wow funny how it happened like described in the anime", but that could be said for any pre-2011 anime about catastrophic earthquakes so... I guess that's not so incredible :D

I remember watching this when it first came out. Didn't finish it, though. Decided to pick it up again when my interest in anime took a huge spark again, and woah.

It's sad, but it's nice and absolutely heart warming. I don't regret watching it one bit. A definite recommendation.

are you all ok? I have lived through the quake in Tokyo (which was Shindo 6- there btw.). If you would ever feel a real quake here in Japan you would not say such <curseword /> <curseword /> <curseword /> <curseword /> things!

And I do not care if this was meant to be funny! Many people lost lost their life's, there house, their exisitance  :!: :!:

Take a look here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/quakebook/ and then restart thinking!

I live in fear for my family, because a Tokyo quake is imminent. And I remember well, when this Anime was shown on TV. My wife and I where both not able to watch it. It's to close to heart.

and a thumbs up to shinji!

[And sorry if anyone feels this a trolling, it's not meant to be, I just lived it and such respect less comments are not acceptable!]
