If you have very strict ideas about gender roles you will like this movie. I have to give it credit that it builds a complicated story and has neat visuals and ideas. However, it is so disturbingly patriarchal and the female characters are just completely useless/written off/need to be saved by the boys. For me, the film loses a lot of points because of that. It doesn't really talk about anything profound in terms of social commentary (really it's the opposite), but like I said it does have some neat ideas (although they aren't explored to the extent I would have liked).
5cm per second I recall being far superior, though I'm writing this after just seeing The Promised Place, almost a year after seeing 5cm per second.
Visually... I don't know. The film is more or less 80% sunsets. If that's your idea of visually stunning then ok, but I found it overused to the point of meaninglessness. There is some point where you just think there's too many cliches, especially in the artistic department, for it to be anything more than a movie with a good budget but no one creative behind the wheel.

what ungodly font is this?!
I feel like I've gone to a 3d movie from the 1980's but they forgot to give me the blue+red specs.
no comment on the movie yet, I had to pause 45 seconds in and post this. It probably won't seriously affect my enjoyment of the film, but holy moses is it ever a bizarre choice
Edit: It's a good movie, and quite pretty, but I would really have liked a more complete resolution for certain plot elements. By all means watch it, but if you like your mysterious plot threads to have concrete explanations, you may find some frustration here.

Update: I have finally got the ASS file to sub-100KB.Thus, I've upped the files with updated styling to the attachments section.
Both an ASS file with my own styling, and an SRT file for unstyled subs for those that prefer it.
I don't see it. Is it cos I'm 2.5 years late?

Yes. Will just have to make do with Thora's styling until someone does us all a favor and offers niizk's version of this movie.

The subtitle style can be disabled using Media Player Classic. Play -> Subtitles -> Default Style.
Other players probably have a similar option.
