And I use LTO tapes. A 200GB LTO2 tape costs ~27EUR locally, but I can usually get them cheaper on ebay (I have to buy 5 or 10 at a time though) and I paid ~145EUR for a used drive. Much more convenient than DVDs (200GB = ~45 DVDs) and cheaper that BDs. Also, if I mess something up while recording it, I can try again, since the tape is rewritable, unlike a DVD-R or BD-R. They also should last 10-30 years in storage.

Where exactly do you live?
I'm from belgium ;).

But a tape drive isn't as versatile as a couple of DVD's imo.
When you go to a friend or a LAN you can swap around your DVD case or folders and everyone can copy those files.
With your tapes that's a different story. (Let alone just read a couple of files, it has to "seek" to the file, which could take ages)

Also, they usually use compression on those tapes, don't they? Your statement that they're rewritable is true,
but not for an unlimited amount of times. Yes the're cheaper but still.
I prefer comfort and usability.
How long does it take to write a tape? A school I used to work for had those 200GB tapes as well. It took them at least a good portion of the evening/night to write to it, whereas a DVD is just a couple of minutes.

But this discussion is actually awfully off-topic :D.

I can copy the files from the tape to a hard drive. This also ensures that the original tape (or DVD or whatever) does not leave my home and has less chance of getting lost/damaged.
Maximum seek time for LTO is about 90 seconds. It could be a problem if you want one file from a lot of tapes, but not a problem if I want to copy a whole series (to either watch it again or give to a friend).

Yes, they do, but while compression helps a lot when storing text files or whatever, it does not help at all when recording already compressed files like video. The compression algorithm is smart and does not compress a block if the compression actually makes the size increase.
Yes, the tape will wear out after some time, but I am not using them as hard disks. The fact that the tape is rewritable helps me if I mess something up (forget to include a file, notice that the compression for some reason did a good job and I still have space left, the computer crashes). But yes, the tape is good for about 260 full passes (that is, reading the entire tape) and 10000 loads, but since I am using them for archival sotorage, I think the 30 year life limit will come first (if I am accessing something very often I'll keep in on a hard drive and maybe keep a tape copy as backup).

So do I. That's why I use tapes instead of DVDs. It took me about 200 DVDs before I realized that they take a lot of space and are a pain to record.

About two hours for recording and another two for verification (which you can skip of course, if you want). The speed is ~30MB/s (the maximum for my drive, the LTO2 standard supports up to 40MB/s), which is about 20X DVD. I do not know of any DVD drive that can sustain 20X over the entire disc (and not only near the edge).

Also, while a DVD takes only a couple of minutes, did you try recording 43 of them (since a tape is 200GB it should be compared to 200GB of DVDs)? It would take longer than a couple of minutes and you would spend the entire time swapping disks, while  can just set the record process and do something else (sleep/watch anime/etc) while the tape is being recorded.

I hope the mods don't get angry, maybe it is useful information, I hope...
