I don't see a problem here. I think the story is great and is actually refreshing. If you don't like how it ended, well tough.
There's something wrong if the direction of a story is dictated by the opinions of the readers and not by the creativity of the author.
And warning people to stay away from a story because of the ending is like saying don't finish reading Romeo and Juliet all the way through because the ending is bad. What is the point then?
My two cents.

Honestly I liked the ending, it's different and does not conform to the stereotype. Kudos to the author for doing it that way.

I saw chapter 57 on a mangareader site. Should update the torrent.

yup, unexpectedly volume 10 had come out. however I think updating should wait until all translations are completed.

The 10th volume is actually Usagi Drop: Bangaihen, an extra which was released after the series is over but was then bundled into the 1oth volume afterwards, still currently being scanlated...

March 13th 2012 (2 months and 9 days)At the same time this ending didn't wierd/gross me out nor does it stop me from enjoying the first half of the series. To people wanting to read this I would simply say that the first four volumes and the last "five" volumes are not at all the same story or even really the same genre. That doesn't mean they aren't both worth reading per say but if you're easily offended or view yourself as having a somewhat conservative stance on how people should live their lives you might want to skip the second half.
As for my thoughts on the ending and why it doesn't creep me out or whatever:
I honestly don't find fault in the ending for being what it is. Daikitchi doesn't accept it initially (even going so far as to tell her that her loving him is the most painful thing she could do to him) and even after the two year skip he still isn't entirely on board. So to me this isn't impossibly out of character for him. Nor was the ending that much of an "ass pull" on the part of the author, you could see it coming for most of the second half of the series (nor was the reveal that Rin wasn't related shocking in the slightest). I can see how the subject might be taboo to some but at the same time given that we know the thoughts of both parties and know that she wasn't brought up with the expectation of her falling in love with him I can't say I find it wrong.
I do find the comments that Rin needed to be sent to a shrink a bit much though. Just because she doesn't think of things as others might doesn't mean she has a mental issue. After all our world is full of people who think differently from how each of us think, be it politics, religion, sexual orientation, and so forth, that doesn't have to mean they are wrong or in need of mental help for doing so.
