where's 14. espisode?

I think I'll have to add a comment to the description to this effect:

Episode 14 was not included by the fansub group because it is a recap of previous episodes.
The episode included no new material so it was left out to save time, effort, and resources.

I've just played these episodes on MPC v1.1.796.0.  This is a so strange, as I think I have a very bare-bones basic MPC setup with no extra codecs or fancy additions and I find no playback problems with any of the Kaiji S2 episodes, whether 8-bit or 10-bit.

I suggest posting a query to the Playback sub-forum under the "Need help?  Ask here" sub-forum here:

So I'm assuming there's still issues with this release?

I just ran to the same problem with surdumil, using a very old MPC version, MPC-HC 6.4.9.1, and also the newest VLC.
Also MPC shows artifacts, so the files are most likely corrupted. Rtorrent hashed and said the files are ok.
MPC desyncs all the time, while VLC just fails at displaying any video at all, defaulting to green screen.

for everyone having problems with playback: i suggest using the up to date version of CCCP.
with a clean install (which i just did) episode 18, 19 and 20 played without any issue.

You didn't have to delete my messages... -.-

The update worked for me and the subtitles fixed themselves.

I don't like this 10-bit thing   The episodes using it aren't actually better looking than the others. This encode is gorgeous in 8bit or 10bit. My HDMI output from my laptop is not working, so my only option was watching it on my WD TV Live v2... Thanks goodness for FFMPEG!!! If it was not for it, I would not have been able to watch it at the device and I would have to watch it on my laptop's small 17'' screen!

If you want to convert any 10bit encode to 8bit, install ffmpeg and use this command line:

ffmepg -i "your_file_name" -vcodec libx264 -sameq -acodec copy "output_file_name.mkv"

Episode 18, which is 10bit, went down from 277MB to 184MB and still looked great. If you try hard, you'll spot some artifacts, but watching it from a proper distance on a big screen I couldn't pinpoint them. My wife didn't see any difference... so, even though it is certainly not as "perfect" as the original 8bit and 10bit episodes it is still very, very good looking...

I respect a LOT the anime encoders for pushing up the limits of technology. But I think that they believed in works from others that stated sensible gains of using 10bit encoding for distribution encodes without actually measuring the benefits themselves. I think it is just a fad. I have made a LOT of frame by frame analysis of 8bit and 10bit encodes, and I didn't spot any noticeable/perceptual differences.

But, hey, that's just me. I don't blame and I don't complain to the encoders. These people have been working hard, for free, they are real altruists. If I don't agree with something they do, that's it, just a disagreement. I've got the tools to reencode so that I can enjoy it on my big screen. So I'm still a LOT thankful to them.

(but I would love to see them going back to 8bit encodes  :innocent:)

TVHD 10-bit encodes? that doesn't even make sense, not only can I not play it, but its based off compressed to hell mpeg source files.....AND IT WAS FUCKING ANIMATED IN 8-BIT!!  I dont know if it will look worse, but it will never look better

The "reasoning" behind it is that there seems to be possible to achieve a smaller file, with 10bit encodes, with the same quality of a reference 8bit encode (this is in fact a surprising result, people thought that 10bit colors would increase size instead). The problem I see with that is that the encodes are already very, very small! So a 5% size decrease is ridiculous. The quality gains the encoders are claiming are nonsense. They are seeing what they want to see. The anime encodes were already the state of the art, jumping into the 10bit bandwagon was, IMHO, somewhat of a fad...

Now I have to reencode everything so that it play on my Caska car multimedia so that my little children remain calm watching, placidly, Elfen Lied, while I drive in peace!
