but all i see is a green screen, or a pixelated screen

I bet you are using VLC version 1.1.1 it is older version which can't play 10-bit video.
But you are lucky they just released VLC 2.0 which can play 10-bit so just download new VLC and it should be ok.
(before this release you could only watch 8-bit or use sometimes unstable nightly build of vlc 2.0+)
